Uncontrolled behaviors that can negatively impact a person's performance are also considered addictive behaviors.
On the one hand, social media offers significant benefits, such as the ability to stay in touch with family and friends, strengthen emotional support networks, and access useful information about psychological well-being. It can also be a tool for self-expression and the development of communities that promote inclusion and empathy.
On the other hand, excessive or inappropriate use of these platforms has been linked to increased levels of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and loneliness. Factors such as constant social comparison, the search for approval through "likes," and exposure to idealized content contribute to a distorted view of reality. Furthermore, cyberbullying and digital overexposure can generate feelings of insecurity and isolation.
Scientific evidence suggests that the impact of social media depends primarily on usage time, the type of content consumed, and how people interact with these platforms. Mindful, balanced use with clear boundaries can reduce risks and enhance benefits.
- Pornography and Sex:
- Sex is a basic human need; however, it becomes a problem when a large amount of time is dedicated to this activity, whether alone or with others, using pornography to achieve sexual arousal. Pornography is a material that can become extremely addictive, given that it allows arousal without the need to interact with other people.
- Gambling:
- Gambling addiction is a disorder that can range from wasting time that could be spent more productively to spending enormous amounts of money. Gambling exploits a phenomenon known in psychology as intermittent reinforcement, which means that the desired reward is received only a relatively small number of times and without a regular pattern.
- Food:
- Food addiction is a prominent problem in eating disorders, where the person loses control and consumes large quantities of food, feeling unwell afterward.
- New technologies:
- People can't disconnect from their devices because they've developed a significant dependence on them and need them for their daily lives. Internet addiction is particularly noticeable among young people, whether for research or gaming.
- Shopping:
- The main problem is spending large amounts of money on unnecessary products and services. This carries the risk of developing disorders like Diogenes Syndrome.
- Work:
- Prioritizing work over other aspects of life, such as personal relationships, childcare, or pursuing hobbies, negatively impacts quality of life.
- Emotional addictions:
- These can be due to dependence on someone or a need to maintain a certain mood.
