Occupational

Occupational
Therapy

According to the definition of the World Health Organization, it is a set of techniques that, through different activities focused on therapeutic purposes, helps to prevent, maintain and restore health. It seeks to enable the patient to have a higher quality of life in case they have a problem that prevents them from carrying out their activities adequately and independently, with the goal of being able to continue with their personal, social and work life.

The activities chosen should be considered necessary tools for achieving the established goals; occupational therapy is not simply about keeping the patient busy. An important point is that these activities must always be relevant to the person undergoing therapy.

Who can benefit from Occupational Therapy?

Due to its flexibility, this therapy can be indicated for various problems, such as physical or intellectual disabilities, dementia, different mental disorders, addictions, learning difficulties, emotional or behavioral problems, depression, autism, and even some illnesses unrelated to mental health. For example, it can be indicated for someone who has suffered an accident, stroke, arthritis, stress, etc.

Occupational therapy can also be indicated for any age, from children to older adults, and can be used in conjunction with other treatments such as individual therapy.

What is the goal of Occupational Therapy?

The main goal is to improve the patient's quality of life, improve mood, stimulate and strengthen existing skills, develop new skills, and prevent and address various types of physical, mental, and cognitive problems.

It also aims to promote the patient's autonomy. If they are unable to perform certain daily activities, therapy can help them increase their capacity to be more independent.

What is done in Occupational Therapy?

The therapist will not always prescribe the same activities, as each case is very different, and the goals to be achieved must be taken into account. However, activities may include those related to memory, fine motor skills, cognitive stimulation, neurosensory stimulation, artistic activities, manual work such as carpentry, blacksmithing, etc., and recreational activities so that the patient can have a moment of leisure and enjoyment. Sometimes yoga and relaxation techniques may also be prescribed.

Some activities that are indicated for patients with motor difficulties may be everyday tasks, such as washing, relearning to use cutlery, personal hygiene, etc. Other activities may include role-playing, that is, experiencing hypothetical situations they might encounter in the near future.

Also as part of this type of therapy, lists of daily activities that should be performed can be created. This exercise is common for patients who are depressed and unable to lead a normal life because they have lost interest.

Occupational therapy can be carried out in a rehabilitation center if the patient is hospitalized, and it can also be prescribed to be done directly at the patient's home. It should always be supervised by a professional, who sometimes collaborates with other disciplines for more comprehensive rehabilitation.

How to Receive Occupational Therapy?

It's important to note that this therapy should always be prescribed by a specialist, as a patient evaluation is necessary, encompassing their physical and mental health, as well as their current level of independence. This evaluation will determine the activities that can help them achieve their desired goals. Occupational therapy is primarily indicated when an individual has difficulty performing their daily activities normally and actively.

Therapy can be conducted individually, although some therapists offer group sessions to address other areas such as social development and confidence. Group activities might include cooking workshops, crafts, or discussion groups.

The patient must commit to completing the assigned activities on time and as instructed by their therapist. Maintaining as much enthusiasm as possible is essential to ensure they don't abandon the therapy.

Family support is important; however, it is suggested that the patient be as independent as possible in their daily tasks. For this, you can consult the therapist about how to help a family member undergoing occupational therapy.

If you have any difficulties that prevent you from being independent in your daily life, and you do not have any of the problems mentioned above, such as a mental disorder, addictions, etc., it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with the therapist. During the session, you can discuss your concerns and the reason you have sought therapy.

At Margaritas Therapeutic Community, we offer Occupational Therapy as one of our rehabilitation treatments. We invite you to contact us for more information about this and other therapies.
