(Group Psychotherapy)
The patient is provided with a professional relationship with a psychologist who will help them alleviate and modify existing symptoms of distress, prevent others, manage behaviors, and improve their quality of life.
These sessions allow participants to openly express their experiences and challenges without fear, with the goal of finding solutions. Group therapy is used because of its effectiveness in working with one or more patients simultaneously. Through meetings and sessions focused on a specific issue, therapy can address addiction, the loss of a family member or friend, trauma, or other disorders.
Groups can be small, medium, or large, and can also be segmented by age, gender, or specific problem to find the best group for each individual. Sessions typically last about an hour and a half, depending on the therapist's preference.
How is group therapy conducted?
The purpose of group therapy is for each participant to share their experience through dialogue. It can be combined with individual therapy, and participants will also hear the different perspectives of their peers, who will also be able to share their experiences.
Group therapy should always be facilitated by a specialist, who will moderate the session. It's an excellent way for patients to build trust. Initially, patients may not want to talk about their situation, so in those sessions, they can simply listen until they feel comfortable enough to actively participate.
The sessions are not just about expressing thoughts, situations, and ideas. The therapist may also implement activities or exercises to create a more trusting environment and may even use experiential exercises. The entire group therapy session has a structure developed by the specialist, who knows when to introduce exercises or integrate a new patient.
What disorders can Group Therapy help with?
Group Therapy is used for a variety of problems due to its effectiveness, flexibility, and ability to address different disorders within a single group.
It is used to treat problems such as:
- Depression
- Drug and alcohol addiction
- Schizophrenia
- Relationship problems
- Anxiety
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Personality disorders
- Eating disorders
How to Join Group Therapy?
The specialist will decide whether the patient is suitable for group therapy. Sometimes it's combined with individual therapy and should be prescribed for the treatment of a specific problem.
It's important that the participant commits to group therapy. They must attend all the sessions scheduled by their therapist and not abandon the group, even if they begin to notice improvement. The process ends when the specialist indicates it's complete.
The specialist will likely conduct an initial interview to determine if a group is appropriate. Sometimes, there's a waiting period before joining, and depending on the therapist, participants may only be able to join at certain points in the group therapy.
