A halfway house is a type of residential treatment, not the same as a psychiatric hospitalization. The patient will be able to live within the residence, where they will also receive treatment and can participate in various activities developed by the Margaritas Therapeutic Community.
When a patient is living in a halfway house, all the trained staff help the patient to undergo continuous and supervised treatment, while living with other people, being supervised, but always respecting the individuality and autonomy of each of the residents.
What is a halfway house?
It is also a phase of patient treatment, in which other important aspects for a positive outcome are addressed. Among the most valuable aspects is that patients learn during their stay that will help them resume their daily lives, such as specific aspects of their disorder, how to overcome obstacles, improve their quality of life, and manage anxiety. It serves as a bridge between hospitalization and returning home, which is necessary to prevent the process from becoming more complicated.
In halfway houses, patients are supported in various ways, individually and in groups, with multidisciplinary activities such as talks, workshops, and therapies. These activities help them cope with the changes that come with psychiatric hospitalization or addiction rehabilitation, mitigate the stress that can arise from returning to daily life, and strengthen their decision-making skills.
If a halfway house is required as part of addiction treatment, the patient will become aware during this stage of the places and social circles that could be triggers, and will learn how to avoid them for their rehabilitation and greater safety.
The length of a patient's stay will depend on the specific needs of the patient. It may be for a period of 90 days or longer to readjust, as determined by the specialist, along with the initial recommendation for halfway house admission and the patient's readjustment date.
In some cases, halfway houses can also be a rehabilitation alternative for people with addictions who have suffered repeated relapses that prevent them from fully recovering, or for those who cannot be fully rehabilitated because their social or family environment does not allow it.
Why choose a halfway house?
Sometimes, for medical reasons, psychiatric patients no longer need to remain in an institution or permanent inpatient care, but they must continue treatment and may not yet feel comfortable returning home and resuming their daily activities.
This is not complete isolation, as the goal is to gradually introduce social interaction. Therefore, visits and calls with family members are permitted.
The halfway houses at the Margaritas Therapeutic Community have highly trained, respectful, professional, and dedicated staff to the treatment and progress of patients so that, gradually and under supervision, they can reintegrate into their lives.
